Before learning:

Summer was a nice student. She was able to interact with our conversation even if she had difficulty in expressing herself in English. She’s trying her very best to come up with the right English word to use. There were times that she’s quite hesitant to say what’s on her mind. Probably she’s afraid to make mistakes. She lacks confidence to herself. It seems that she’s very eager to learn this language and I can see her determination to improve and develop her Oral speaking English skills. She has good listening skills. She listened carefully and can follow my instructions properly. However, there were times that she’s having a hard time understanding my questions. With lack of knowledge with the vocabulary, some of the questions were left unanswered. So I have to simplify my questions for her to understand it completely.

Her pronunciation was not that good. She needs to work on her pronunciation especially the “L” and “R” sound. As well as the v/, /b/, /p/ and /f/ sound. She’s having difficulty pronouncing long and unfamiliar words. Her native accent is very obvious that sometimes it’s hard for me to understand it. And she need to be aware with the rise and fall of her intonation, it’s the proper blending and phrasing. Her vocabulary was very limited. She can only use basic vocabulary words and sometimes she had trouble understanding complicated words. The good thing for her is that she asks questions if she doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

After learning:

I’ve seen a great improvement to her performance every month. Her comprehension skill is absolutely excellent. She’s very responsive and interactive. She can fully express herself very well in English. She’s very confident and has excellent manners. She has made good general progress in literacy and English. If she continues to improve at this rate she should have much success with her English studies.

She expressed her thoughts confidently and she freely shared it. She was able to provide information that was related to our topic and she supported it with some explanations. She answered the questions comprehensively.

She has great listening skills. She listens attentively in class. She was able to understand and follow my instructions.

She’s pronunciation skills it’s getting better and better. She can pronounce the words clearly and understandable. Though minor slips were still visible especially words that starts with /l/ and /r/ sound. I know that she’s very committed to improve her pronunciation skills. She’s now aware with the tenses, the use of prepositions and articles as well as the subject-verb agreement.

It’s a pleasure to have Summer in my class. She is absolutely a fast learner. She really did her best to learn the English language. She really spends most of her time practicing the pronunciation drills that we did in class. She even joined the reading contest. Always have a self-confidence to communicate with the foreigners. The best way to improve her listening skill is to listen a lot. She must spend much hours listening to people speaking English. Aside from that, she must listen to things that interest her. Try to watch English movies or drama. Listen and understand what the speaker is saying and try to imitate it. Most important is listen to audio English lessons especially our recording files.

As for her pronunciation, never stop practicing especially the pronunciation drills that I gave to her. Watch out for the rise and fall of her intonation. Remember, she needs to watch out for her vowel and consonant sounds, word and sentence stress, word reductions, linking, and intonation. Just remember that improving your pronunciation will take a lot of patience and commitment.

Always be mindful with your sentence structure particularly with the tenses, the correct use of preposition and other parts of speech. Make sure that when you compose a sentence, the words should be in order and the thoughts are there. Never stop learning. Good luck and remember learning English is fun. Keep up the good work!
